Did you know that June 5th is recognized as National Ketchup Day? For all the fans of the tangy condiment, it’s your day to celebrate! Here’s a fun fact, ketchup’s origins date back to 300 B.C. China. Originally called kê-tsiap and far from the sauce we know today. It was made with fermented fish, mushrooms, and walnuts. Around the 17th century British sailors visited Southeast Asia and they quickly became enamored with sauce, adding it to their crackers and meats. They later tried to replicate the recipe and began bottling their own version calling it catsup. But it wasn’t until 1812 when an American scientist named James Mease created the tomato-based ketchup we know and love today.
