Dark, Leafy Kale

Kale has been a part of the human diet for centuries. Kale’s origins date back to 2000 B.C. when it was cultivated in Asia Minor and the Eastern Mediterranean. With historical records showing that curly leaf and flat leaf cabbage variations were a part of Greek diets in 400 B.C. and is believed to be a predecessor of what we call kale today. The Romans called these cabbages Sabellian kale. Often considered a super food due to its abundance of natural plant protein, rich iron content and high amount of vitamins A and C. Kale is also a good source of fiber, carotenoids, manganese, folate, and vitamins B6, C, and K. Studies have shown that consuming kale may help manage blood pressure and boost digestive health. So, the next time you’re making a smoothie or shake a handful for a natural nutrient boost, switch out lettuce for kale in your afternoon salad or make bite-size kale chips as a healthy snack! Look through our kale recipe collection to find some deliciously wholesome dishes.

The Benefits of a Mediterranean Diet

If you’re looking for a diet to begin for the New Year, consider The Mediterranean Diet. It’s delicious, heart-healthy, diabetes-friendly, and the winner for the sixth year in a row for Best Overall Diet. What sets the Mediterranean diet apart from other diets is that it isn’t a whole lifestyle change, it’s not about food groups but food quality. The Mediterranean Diet focuses primarily on plant-based foods: whole grains, nuts, beans, fruits and vegetables. With an emphasis on lean meats like poultry and fish, over red meats. And seasoning foods with herbs and spices in lieu of salt. Lastly, the Mediterranean diet has been shown to lower the risk of heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and certain cancers, such as breast, colon and prostate. Are you ready to start the Mediterranean Diet? Let Bianchini’s help get you started, we carry a large assortment of Mediterranean Diet related foods, that are fresh, ready to cook and enjoy today.

Sweet Golden Goodness

Get ready for an extra sweet foodie holiday this Sunday because, 12/17 is with Maple Syrup Day! Did you know that Canada and the New England area of the United States are the two leading producers of maple syrup? While the most popular use for maple syrup is to pour over a hot stack of pancakes and French toast, there’s so much more maple syrup can do! It’s a delicious addition to sauces, marinades, dressings, desserts and even cocktails. Shake up the norm by replacing the jelly in a PB&J with maple syrup, it’s richer, sweet, and terrifically tasty! Try maple syrup as a glaze for your holiday ham in place of the traditional brown sugar glaze. Or drizzle maple syrup over your roasted vegetables to add a bit sweetness without being sugary. And if you’re bold enough, try a Maple-Bourbon Smash or Maple Old Fashioned. Browse our maple-themed recipe collection for some extra sweet ideas.
