Rao’s Pasta Sauce Voted #1

A panel of chefs from Allrecipes.com chose Rao’s Homemade Marinara as their favorite. They liked that Rao’s sauces taste great on their own and don’t need anything added. The simple ingredient list includes Italian whole peeled tomatoes, olive oil, onions, salt, garlic, basil, black pepper, and oregano. Rao’s makes their sauces in small batches using quality ingredients like Italian olive oil and ripe tomatoes from southern Italy. There are no tomato blends, pastes, added water, starches, fillers, colors, or sugar in Rao’s. It’s a reliable, authentic sauce you can enjoy with any meal.

Get Nutty for National Nut Day!

This Wednesday, October 22nd, is National Nut Day. We’re looking forward to celebrating by enjoying walnuts, almonds, cashews, macadamias, pecans, pistachios, and hazelnuts. Nuts are a favorite food for many reasons. They give you energy and are packed with nutrients for both people and wildlife. You can eat them raw, sprouted, or roasted, and they make a great snack. This week is packed with exciting sports and the perfect chance to fire up the grill. There’s a big game almost every day. The NBA season tips off on Tuesday, October 21st. On Thursday, October 23rd, the Warriors play their home opener against the Nuggets. Friday brings the first game of the World Series. Saturday, Stanford Football takes on Miami, and on Sunday, the Forty Niners face the Texans. With so much action, figuring out what to serve can be tough. We’re here to make it easier. National Meatloaf Day!

We are excited to celebrate National Meatloaf Day this Saturday, October 18th. This dinner favorite is a staple in many households for its simplicity and heartiness. One of the original meatloaf recipes called for a mixture of minced meat, oats, and spices that were baked to a golden brown. Meatloaf originates from a combination of German, Scandinavian, Czech, Swiss, and Belgian cuisines. 18th-century Pennsylvania Dutch settlers brought their recipes to America, adjusting the ingredients to what was readily available. One of the early versions of what many Americans call meatloaf is a di sh called scrapple, which is made with pork and cornmeal shaped into a lo af. Today, ground beef is the standard base for most meatloaves, but nearly any meat can be adapted to fit the recipe, like lamb, pork, chicken, turk ey, veal, or venison. Oh, the Pasta-bilities!

We’re celebrating an all-time foodie holiday favorite this Friday, it’s National Pasta Day! Every year on October 17th, people across the country celebrate by enjoying their favorite pasta dishes. The first written record of pasta production dates back to around 1154 in Sicily. The basic pasta recipe involves unleavened dough that’s mixed with water or eggs, formed into a shape, and either served freshly cooked after shaping or dried and stored for later cooking. The Pick of the Patch

We are only a few weeks into Fall, and our stores already have a special delivery of everyone’s favorite orange squash, pumpkins! The pumpkins we usually think of are orange, big, and round with lines running from top to bottom. But pumpkins come in all shapes, sizes, and colors, like short and round, small like a baseball, yellow, green, and even white. While many people enjoy baking their pumpkin into tasty treats, the most popular activity is carving Jack-o’-Lanterns. The tradition started in Ireland around the 1900s with turnips. People carved faces into them and put a piece of coal inside to make a lantern. These lanterns were meant to keep away evil spirits and strange creatures. The tradition came to America with Irish and Scottish immigrants. They started using pumpkins because they were easier to carve. We’re celebrating a doubly delicious food holiday this Thursday, October 9th, with International Beer & Pizza Day. This classic combo goes well with almost any kind of beer and pizza. If you like a simple margherita and cheese, a light beer like a pilsner, blonde ale, or light lager is a good match. If you love classic pepperoni, an IPA or Amber ale is a great choice, since they have stronger flavors. If you want more kick, like with a BBQ Chicken pizza, try a brown ale or porter; their bold flavors can bring out the taste of the sauce.
