Celebrating Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, translates in Hebrew to “Head of the Year”. This joyous event will begin the evening of September 22nd and conclude at sundown on September 24th. In preparation for Rosh Hashanah, our stores will have fresh-baked round challah from Woodside Bakery, a local favorite of the Bay Area. Woodside Bakery is a traditional European-style “scratch” bakery that prepares everything in-house using the highest quality ingredients available. Their passion and love for baking go into everything they make, including their famous challah bread. The circular shape of challah bread symbolizes the hope that the New Year will be filled with many blessings. Along with their famous challah, Woodside Bakery specially bakes a variety of other goods and delivers them to our Portola Valley and San Carlos stores. Stop into our bakery to pick up a freshly baked round challah for your Rosh Hashanah celebration.

Neely Wine Vineyard Contest

Local vintner Neely Wine is a family owned winery located in Portola Valley within the Santa Cruz Mountains. Neely is an estate-grown Pinot Noir and Chardonnay producer that focuses on minimal intervention, which allows the unique terroir of their rugged, coastal-influenced vineyards to shine. Rooted in both tradition and innovation, the Neely family works closely with winemaker Sarah Green to craft elegant, site-driven wines that highlight the character of each vineyard block. The estate’s hillside setting and hands-on approach create wines with balance, depth, and a strong sense of place. Please stop by the Neely Wine table on Saturday, September 20th, during our Taste Local event at our San Carlos location, and enter to win the Neely Wine Vineyard and wine tasting for two. The contest winner will have the opportunity to visit the tasting barn, take a tour of the vineyards, visit the winery, and enjoy a complete Estate Wine Tasting experience for two people, which includes small bites and charcuterie. No Purchase necessary. And as always, when you buy six or more bottles of wine, get 10% off! Mix or match your favorites.

California Grown Lundberg Rice

This Tuesday, September 9th, marks a historical day. It’s California’s 175th birthday! We are celebrating this momentous day with California’s own Lundberg Rice. Did you know that Lundberg Family Farms grows much of its rice in California? The Lundberg family has been farming for four generations in the Sacramento Valley, in and around Richvale. It all began in 1937, when Albert and Frances Lundberg left Nebraska with their four sons in the wake of the Dust Bowl. They brought along with them a flatbed Chevy truck and a Farmall tractor, along with a new philosophy, “Leave the land better than you found it.” With that mindset, Lundberg Family Farms has implemented regenerative organic farming practices. These farming techniques encourage healthy soil, support biodiversity, and increase carbon capture. The Sacramento Valley’s natural landscape, which includes floodplains and wetlands, is ideal for growing rice. The reliably hot, dry summers discourage pests and diseases that are typically brought on by humidity. And the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range snow melt flows naturally into the Sacramento Valley by way of the Feather River. Which is the water used to grow Lundberg rice and support local wildlife. Try Lundberg Family Farms Rice in your meals this week.

A Toast to National Red Wine Day

Did you know that this Thursday, August 28th, is National Red Wine Day? Red wines come in an array of colors, from deep ruby red, like Syrah and Merlot, to subtle amber, like Pinot Noir and Port. And their palates vary just as much, from dry and bright to light and sweet. One of the more popular red varieties is the Cabernet Sauvignon, affectionately called the “King of Reds.” Due to the wine’s bold, complex flavor profile and distinctive mouthfeel. Cabernet Sauvignon’s origins are a complete accident, with the unintentional hybridization of Cabernet Franc grapes with Sauvignon Blanc grapes from the Bordeaux region of France. Let’s raise a glass and celebrate Red Wine Day with your favorite bottle. We have even more to celebrate! When you buy 6 bottles or more of wine, get 10% off the total when you buy 6 or more bottles of wine. So, pick up a bottle of your favorite red and maybe discover something new.
