Calling all Bay Area pasta lovers March 20th, is National Ravioli Day!
What’s not to love about the ravioli? It’s two layers of pasta dough with a filling, usually cheese and meat or vegetable and served in a broth or pasta sauce. Ravioli is most often served as an entrée, but it also makes a great appetizer or side to the main course. For those sweet tooths out there, ravioli can also be served as a dessert. These dessert raviolis are filled with chocolate and ricotta or cream cheese and caramel sauce. The earliest mention of a ravioli dates back to the 14th century when Francesco di Marco Datini, a merchant of Prato, wrote of them in his personal letters. Around the mid-14th century, a cooking manuscript detailed green herbs and cheese ravioli in a broth with ‘sweet and strong spices’. If you’d like to try making your own ravioli at home, browse our ravioli recipe collection.
