National Meatloaf Appreciation Day

Mark your calendar and bring out your loaf pan because this Friday, 10/18, is National Meatloaf Appreciation Day. Traditional meatloaf of minced meat mixed with oats and spices, has roots in German, Scandinavian, Czech, Swiss and Belgian cuisines. 18th century Pennsylvania Dutch settlers brought their recipes to America, adapting what was available to their meals. An early version of what many Americans call meatloaf has origins in a dish called scrapple, which is made with pork and cornmeal shaped into a loaf. Today, ground beef is the standard base for a homemade meatloaf, but many meats can be accommodated to fit the recipe, like, lamb, pork, poultry, veal, or venison.
