For all the Bay Area pizza aficionados, this Wednesday, June 11th, is National Margherita Pizza Day. This day commemorates the anniversary of the pizza’s creation. Honoring the visit of Queen Margherita of Savoy and King Umberto I to Naples in 1889. Created by pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito of Pizzeria Brandi, using the colors of the Italian flag (red, white, and green) for toppings. A classic margherita pizza consists of red tomato sauce, white mozzarella, and green basil. Queen Margherita reportedly enjoyed the pizza so much, she declared it “Excellent”.
