Lunar New Year This Sunday!

The Lunar New Year is this Sunday, January 22nd. Join us in welcoming 2023 and The Year of the Rabbit. The sign of the rabbit is a symbol of peace, prosperity and longevity in the Chinese Culture. And the traditional dish that is served on The Lunar New Year is a whole chicken. The white meat of the chicken symbolizes purity and serving the entirety of the chicken represents unity. In honor of this special occasion, we would love for you to try our roasted chicken recipe.

Chinese Whole Roast Chicken

Perfectly tender, light crisp and wholly flavorful.

Ingredients

  • 5 lb. whole chicken
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon five spice powder
  • 1 clove garlic, minced

Directions

The chicken will roast more evenly when trussed. Begin by tucking in the wings into the body and tying them tight to the body of the bird with cooking twine. Then pull the legs together and tie tightly. After trussing the bird, place it into a large sealable bag.

Combine the soy sauce, honey, five spice powder and garlic in a mixing bowl to create the marinade. Pour the marinade into the sealable bag with the chicken and rub all over, coating the chicken evenly. Remove the chicken from the bag and discard the marinade.

Place the chicken breast side up on a rack over a roasting pan. Let the chicken sit for about 30 minutes at room temperature to dry the skin. This will help the skin crisp when it cooks.

Preheat the oven to 400° F.

Place the chicken in the oven and roast for 45–60 minutes, until the chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165° F in the thighs.
