Countdown to 2024
Do you or your family have any fun traditions to ring in the New Year? Like, toasting with a glass of bubbly champagne or preparing a special meal to share with your family and friends. Here are a few unique traditions from around the world that we think are especially fun celebrate.
1) Spain has a tradition of eating 12 grapes during the 12 strokes of midnight are said to welcome in good luck and bring prosperity for the New Year.
2) Germany and parts of Eastern Europe serve cabbage, in the form of coleslaw and sauerkraut, with their New Year’s meals. The long strands of cabbage are said to symbolize a long life, while cabbage itself symbolizes money and prosperity.
3) Many countries in Asia follow a tradition of eating long noodles on New Year’s Day. The long noodles are said to lengthen one’s life.
4) In Greece, families come together to bake a vasilopita, a New Year’s Day cake, that is baked with a coin hidden inside. The cake is cut at midnight, and the person who finds the coin in their slice is said to have good luck for the year.
5) In the Southern United States, black-eyed peas served on a bed of collard greens are a customary dish to serve with a New Year’s supper. The two foods served together are said to represent prosperity and wealth for the coming year.
